I saw Serenity before Firefly, and I didn't feel too lost... which is a testament to how strong he can make standalone tales when he has total creative control. That way his shows would last much longer. His shows demand a certain kind of intelligence that network audiences weaned on reality shows just can't muster. Sci Fi, Fantasy and other genre type shows just don't do well with the networks anymore, with rare exceptions. If Firefly was done on cable it might have lasted a few more years.
