Who are the Tres Komikeros?
Aside from being loudmouths on the interwebz who talk about books with pictures because they can’t read very well, the Tres Komikeros are three absolute strangers from the Philippines brought together by their love of the sequential art form.
EJ Afzelius is a financial planner by day and an actor/writer by night who has been a fan of comics ever since he can remember. Comics were not readily available in Iloilo City where he grew up but a few trips to the metropolis that is Manila and several trade paperbacks through the years kept the fire stoked. Only until he went to college in Manila did Ej become a true collector, going to Comic Quest every week to pick up the latest issues of Spider Man, Superman and several others he has grown to love over the years. Having said that, the more positive books are what attract Ej the most. The concept of good kicking the demonic shit out of villainy is something that resounds with his nature although the occasional horror or monster book gets a rise out of him as well. Why that is… we will never know. He is totally off his rocker that way… but since he almost fears nothing, the hope that something will put the fear of God in him other than his girlfriend probably drives that need for the macabre. Since his dreadful childhood… nothing has.
It also has to be said that he is neither a Marvel nor DC exclusive. He loves him a good book and whichever publisher can provide said awesomeness is cool with him. His favorite writers include Warren Ellis, Ed Brubaker and Mike Bendis while his fave artists include Stuart Immonen, Steve Mc Niven, and Lienil Yu (Go Pinoy!!). Follow EJ on Twitter.
Alex Cipriano is from Cebu, Philippines and works in a call center when he’s not reading comics, drawing stuff, and playing video games. He’s been a fan of comics since he was a child and only started collecting them when he got into college and after getting a job. He once dreamed of being an astronaut, but his lack of mathematical skills and academic achievement made him reroute his dreams to being a comics artist instead. Though busy with his day job, he tries to hone his art when he’s not at work (sometimes at work too), and when he’s not hooked on playing games. He’s into horror and weird tales, and is also a big fan of crime/noir comics, alongside the usual action-filled superhero stories.
He considers Todd McFarlane, Mike Mignola, and Adam Hughes as his main influences in art. His favorite writers include Mike Mignola, Brian Bendis, and Ed Brubaker, among others. Follow Alex on Twitter, or visit his website.
John Amor is a concept designer and comicbook illustrator based in the province of Cebu in the Philippines. He got his first taste of fiction as a child when he saw Ray Harryhausen films with monsters and the like, this was later fostered by the cartoon shows of the era (Thundercats, Silverhawks, etc.) and of course, comic books. The first single issue he ever read was a Jerry Ordway Superman story, galvanizing in his young impressionable and morally flexible brain a love for the icons. Though evenly a fan of both DC and Marvel, he is an advocate of the indie scene, especially for science fiction stories. He is currently drawing independent comic books for new western publishers, but hopes to eventually break into either of the big two. He can circumcise a fly with a coin from ten feet away.
His favorite writers are Warren Ellis, Mark Waid, and Matt Fraction; while his favorite artists are Frank Frazetta, Joe Madureira, and Stuart Immonen. Follow John on Twitter, or visit his website.
