Smile Pile 10.29.08

I honestly don’t know anyone who isn’t enjoying the current Thor run, and I have in fact never been a fan of the guy. Stracszynski and Coipel, what a team. Thor #11 comes out this week and I absolutely cannot wait.

Also out this week:

JOKER Hardcover
FERRYMAN #2
TRINITY #22
SUPERMAN BATMAN #53
MARVEL 1985 #6 (OF 6)

Let us know what you guys are looking forward to. It’s a relatively tame week, so we might pick up some books you want reviewed.

Cover of the Week – 10.23.08

Cover of the Week is my presentation of the best cover from last week’s comic book releases, based on the art, design, and overall good looks.

I’m a big fan of minimalism. You know, less clutter and more emphasis on design. So this week’s covers features non-cramped covers with minimalist design. And boy do I like ’em! And the fairest of them all is none other than Darkseid!

Final Crisis #4 (cover by J.G. Jones)

He’s the King of the Week! The Master of Evil! The Anti-Life Equator! (Equator?) Anyways, J.G. Jones makes pretty awesome art, from interiors to covers to interiors back. Like I’ve said, it’s nothing grand, just a simple figure of Darkseid occupying the page, but it delivers the feel of his presence and how big his role is in the book. For that, I give you this week’s medal! And a candy bar.

Honorable mentions: Punisher #63 (Dave Johnson) & DMZ #35 (JP Leon)

Panel of the Week: New Avengers #46 (last panel/page, art by Billy Tan)

Pretty awesome, yeah?

Cover of the Week – 10.16.08

Cover of the Week is my presentation of the best cover from last week’s comic book releases, based on the art, design, and overall good looks.

It looks like most of the covers I’m featuring today are for books that have variants or having multiple covers. I guess I can call this week, a VARIANT WEEK! Ok, let’s kick it off with my fave cover of last week..

Ghost Rider #28 (both covers by Marc Silvestri)

I’m not a big fan of Marc Silvestri’s art, but I do like some stuff that he puts out, like this one! I don’t have much to say about this cover (or covers), except that it packs a “punch” just by looking at it. I mean, it’s like an action scene suspended in time, with the rotating fiery wheels, blazing heads, and flinging chains. I guess it’s just catchy to the eyes, especially the blue/yellow flame thing contrasting each other.

Honorable mentions: Hack/Slash: New Reader Halloween Treat! #1 by Tim Seeley, Fall of Cthulhu #2 by Jeff Spokes, Amazing Spider-Man #573 Variant (err, Colbert) Edition by Joe Quesada (because I like Quesada), and Fables #77 by James Jean! (click for the full view)

Sorry, no Panel of the Week today. 😦

Episode 07

This week’s hot books were Astonishing X-men #27, Final Crisis: Rogues’ Revenge #3, and Iron Man #34. Alex wasn’t around, so John and EJ devote some quality time to making fun of him… as well as maybe talking about other comic-related news like Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard as War Machine, as well as details about the Captain America film.

Maybe…

Cover of the Week – 10/9/08

Cover of the Week is my presentation of the best cover from last week’s comic book releases, based on the art, design, and overall good looks.

This week: The Dark Tower – Treachery #2 (art by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove)

Jae Lee is one of the artists out there who makes good use of a lot of blacks in his art. His overall style in The Dark Tower series is nothing short of remarkable, and his interiors are as great as his covers. What I personally liked about this cover is her pose,  though exaggerated, and how the bright gradient background compliments her. It’s like being dark, yet the colors give her a hint of femininity. And besides, who wouldn’t like a cute gunslinger girl?

Special mentions: 100 Bullets #96, BPRD – The Warning #4, and Marvel Zombies 3 #1

Bonus! Panel of the Week: Secret Six #2

Your breath smells, Batman.
