Tres Komikeros 20

ep201Ello! Ello! Ello!  The Tres Komikeros actually hit twenty episodes despite being funded only by one-legged midget prostitutes!  It’s a good day indeed!  This week EJ, Alex, and John reviewed Dark Avengers #1, Green Lantern #37, and Uncanny X-men Annual #2!  After a round of quick shots, the boys then talked about movie prequels in comic form, Hollywood’s creative cannibalism, and Marvel titles that should be cancelled!

Cover of the Week – Jan 15 ’09 releases

Cover of the Week is my presentation of the best cover from last week’s comic book releases, based on the art, design, and overall good looks

It’s that time of the week again.  I don’t even know why I’m doing this anymore, aside from the fact that I’m a comics art whore and that posting on the internet is the new “cool” thing these days.  So anyways, everyone’s favorite cover artist is featured this week!  Sorry, it’s not Rob.

Fables #80 (art by James Jean)

Well, who wouldn’t like some panties on their comics cover? And besides, it’s by James Jean! Awesome comics artist extraordinaire! I don’ have much to say about this man, aside that his covers are consistently good (although sometimes they’re just meh, but still better than other books), and there’s even a coffee table book collection of his Fables covers (out of stock on Amazon)! It’s that good and pretty.  His covers have this type of composition that when you see a James Jean cover, you’ll notice that it’s a James Jean cover even if the art might not really look like his.  For me, that’s what a good comics cover should be.  A good mix of art, design, composition, and that feeling that the book is calling you even if after reading it you’ll regret picking it up and blame it all on the cover for being pretty and tempting.  And for some reason, I really find the women he draws on his covers very attractive. Or maybe it’s just me.

Okay.  That’s all, folks.  Tune in after a few days to hear my manly voice talk about comics!

Tres Komikeros 19

ep19This episode’s a little late, but we hope everyone had a nice nerdy weekend anyway.  This week’s main books are Locke and Key: Head Games #1, Prometheus #1, and G.I. Joe #1.  Lotsa first issues for you guys.  We also have a round of quick shots that includes Final Crisis #6!  But watch out for major spoilers! In relation to that, we talk about major characters not getting the privilege of dying in their own books, Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury, and Keanu Reeves’ next film.

Cover of the Week – 01.08.09

Cover of the Week is my presentation of the best cover from last week’s comic book releases, based on the art, design, and overall good looks.

Wow,  there were a lot of cool covers last week! I though I wouldn’t be able to choose in time, but I prevailed! With the help of my experience dealing with these things, choosing a sole winner among a group of winners was as easy as solving the differential area on a slope as x reaches infinity!  So this week, I’m proud to present another artist from our islands, he worked on Moon Knight and now he’s tasked to draw Marvel’s huggable werewolf!  I humbly present Mico Suayan!

Dead of Night – Werewolf  by Night #1 by Mico Suayan

What big teeth you have
What big teeth you have

Well hi-dee-ho, it’s the big bad wolf! I first encountered Mico Suayan’s art in Moon Knight, and I have to say although he does have pretty lines, I wasn’t a big fan of his art back then. Is it just me or do Filipino artists share similarities with how they “hatch”? But anyways, I noticed a big jump from his art on MK to this one, I actually liked his art on this book! I dunno if there’s any difference, but for me there is.

So let’s go to the cover. Actually, I had a hard time picking which cover to use. There’s Hellboy (I’m gay for Mignola), Rest has a good cover too, Scalped has that cool-ass gun, NYX had pretty girls,  X-Men Noir’s variant cover, and Sub-Mariner – The Depths was also awesome.  But I chose this one because of the difference in Mico Suayan’s art which kind of “attracted” me.  I dunno, but I think his style in Moon Knight was too messy, and sometimes (or most of the time) they were over-hatched. I dunno if we can call that hatching, but I noticed most Filipino artists who work for the big publishers tend to hatch and add those rendering lines to their art.  It’s not bad, it adds contour and some texture to it, and it’s actually pretty good.  But sometimes its too much it looks ridiculous.  It could be the coloring too because I really liked the coloring in this cover. It’s not that dark, and the blood’s not that bright or dark either. It sorta blends with the skin and the whole dark/shadowy feel, but it’s really the bloodied mouth that got me.  And he represents Filipino Pride too! Great job Mr. Suayan, sir!

So that ends my part, and I hope to see you all next time!

Tres Komikeros 18

ep18It’s the first official episode of the year, and EJ, Alex, and John are back with a jam-packed episode showcasing Invincible Iron Man #9, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt #2, and Detective Hush Comics #852!  The boys then hit you in the face with a round of quick shots, some Iron Man 2 news, and their opinions on the Transformers 2 teaser image.  The show is rounded out with a couple of listener questions from the TK site.

Cover of the Week – 01.01.09

Cover of the Week is my presentation of the best cover from last week’s comic book releases, based on the art, design, and overall good looks.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! How were your holidays?  Cool?  Yes? It’s a new year and I’m still at it!  Featuring the best comic book cover last week’s releases have to offer!  This week, we will feature art from one of my favorite noir artists.  The exceptionally talented Sean Phillips!

Incognito #1 (Sean Phillips)

smokin' billz

This is actually a wrap-around cover for the new book from the dudes that gave us Criminal and Sleeper.  What makes this my choice? A few reasons actually.  This cover is a good example of good use of font design, it does not steal the attention from the art while maintaining a strong presence. The use of b/w with the exception of the burning bill and the fire, another way of contrasting elements, thus highlighting specific areas of the piece.  And a masked dude lighting a cigar with a bill? That’s badass! Even Wolverine can’t beat that!

Panel of the Week: Fantastic Four #562 (art by Bryan Hitch)

NDS hell yeah! Boy's got taste!

And that’s my cue to sleep! I’ll see you boys and girls in a few days for more comics talk and nonsensical arguments!

Tres Komikeros 17

2008It’s the 2008 year-ender episode!  EJ was absent because he was drunk in a gutter somewhere, so it was up to John and Alex to look back at the year that just passed and dicuss the different things that rocked as well as the things that sucked.   From the best mini-series to the year’s worst comic moments, this episode has it all — an excellent episode for you guys looking to pick up trades but have no idea what was good earlier this year.  Happy Holidays once again and enjoy!
